Along the western edge of Hardangerfjord, in Kvam municipality is an old ‘husmansplass’ with the name Vårli. The farm consists of four buildings that date back to 1800’s, constructed of laft, grindverk and skifer they represent a typical farm in Western Norway.
The client intends to use the farm as a weekend cabin and for longer periods of use in the summer months.
The renovation is comprehensive, and works include improving the plan solutions, improving daylight in the barn and eldhus, extending and restoring the facades of the main house and rebuilding the naust. In addition, a new boat ramp and stone pier is planned.
The upper floor of the barn, traditionally where hay was stored, is today used a storage space for tools and equipment with little natural light. The client wishes to increase the functionality of the barn by opening the facades, allowing the space to be used as a workshop, and occasional dining area when friends and family visit.
Barns in Vestland rarely have large windows, so in order to retain the language of an agricultural building, sliding screens have been designed that cover the windows when not in use. The screens, when closed, have the appearance of ventilation slats that are common on barns, as a way to keep the moisture levels controlled.
