‘RØYS’ takes its name from the stacked stone formations in the cultural landscape – here recreated in local stone that forms the building’s structure.

Openings between the volumes direct the gaze towards the mountains and fjord, and shield against noise from the road. The roof is designed as an accessible walk, where you can ascend and encounter the view of the Lysefjord in new ways.

The building is conceived as a subdued starting point for the journey ahead, where architecture and landscape are indistinguishable from one another.

The building's plan is shaped as a cluster of massive stone volumes, anchored in the landscape. They house the more private functions, while the spaces between them open up as public zones where people can move freely through the building.

The café faces the magnificent panorama out to Lysefjord. Here you can catch your breath, enjoy a meal and let your gaze wander over the fjord and mountains – either as a leisurely start to your trip or as a well-deserved break after meeting the Nordic region’s most iconic mountain formation.

The building grows out of the landscape as a natural extension of it, a place that invites you to stop, explore, wander, reflect and be present – both before and after the encounter with the mountain.
